Education Minister Prof GL Peiris told Parliament yesterday that schools would be reopened only after all the teachers were given the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccines.

Responding to a question by Matale District SJB MP Rohini Kumari Wijeratne, Minister Prof. Peiris said that as of yesterday 84 percent of teachers in government schools had been given the first dose of the vaccines.

The Minister said that it was the poor children who had been affected most by the teachers’ strike. School children from privileged families had the necessary facilities to continue with their education. The teachers had to take this fact into consideration, Prof. Peiris said.
