A driver of a truck carrying a load of illegally mined sand on Saturday (28) night ran over a policeman who ordered him to stop, in the Kobaigane police area.

Police spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said that the 32-year-old victim, PC Ratnayake, attached to the Kobaigane police station, had died on the spot.

The police later found the truck abandoned in the Kuliyapitiya police area.

DIG Rohana said that the police deployment was in line with the Supreme Court directive to take action to prevent illegal sand mining at Daduru Oya.

According to him, the 27-year old suspect was later arrested at Nikaweratiya.
