Police jack up charges for specialised services provided to public

The Police Headquarters has jacked up the fees charged for a list of services provided to the public.

Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasooriya has issued a new circular to all police stations outlining the updated fee structure. This new directive cancels the previous circular No. 2749/2023 (Finance Circular 04/2023), which was in effect since June 2, 2023.

As per the new circular, the fee for the use of police loudspeakers has been increased from Rs. 300 to Rs. 2,000 per day. Additionally, fees for the deployment of official police dogs for school demonstrations have been raised from Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 20,000.

These deployments are subject to a maximum duration of one and a half hours and distance limits, as recommended by a veterinary officer. The final approval for such deployments and any fee exemptions lies with the Inspector General of Police.

The charge for deploying a police horse for one and a half hours has also been increased significantly—from Rs. 6,000 to Rs. 30,000.

Furthermore, the fee for towing a vehicle to the nearest police station has been raised from Rs. 600 to Rs. 15,000.

Fingerprint report fees have risen from Rs. 150 to Rs. 500, while the charge for breathalyzer equipment has increased from Rs. 2,400 to Rs. 4,000. Fees for life-saving and coastal safety equipment have also gone up—from Rs. 1,200 to Rs. 15,000.

The circular further states that private parties who rent police vehicles or boats must obtain temporary insurance coverage to fully protect against any potential damage or loss during private use.
