Police invite public to provide information about nexus between politicians and underworld

The Police Elections Operations Office yesterday requested the public to provide any information they may have of the presidential candidates and their organisers enlisting the support of underworld characters for electioneering.

 “Election operations units have been set up at all police stations so that people can furnish information about links between politicians and the underworld.

Instructions have been issued to OICs to assign at least three policemen each to election units in their stations round the clock. In addition, there will be 45 other such centres countrywide,” a senior police officer said, adding that the first election operations centre would be set up in Colombo.

SDIG (Elections) K.V.D.A.J. Karavita has been appointed to oversee election-related activities. A senior Superintendent of Police will be appointed for coordination in districts.
