PHIs union urges Health Ministry to establish proper mechanism to vaccinate those with allergies
The Ministry of Health should establish a mechanism and protocol to vaccinate those with allergies at the main hospitals in the country as soon as possible, the Public Health Inspectors’ Union (PHIU) said yesterday.
PHIU president Upul Rohana said most of those with serious allergies had not been vaccinated.
“When they visit vaccination centre, those in charge ask them to go to hospitals. This makes sense because vaccination centre have no facilities to deal with a severe allergic reaction. However, the problem is that when a person with a serious allergy visits a main hospital, they are turned away.”
For most people, the main hospital was a district hospital, and some people made the journey with some difficulty. “If such people are turned away, it is highly unlikely that they will return,” he said. (RK)
