Police found more than 3,600 rounds of assault rifle ammunition from a land released for resettlement of a family at Palaly in Jaffna yesterday.

The owner of the land detected the stock of ammunition while he was clearing the land using a backhoe. He then through the Grama Niladhari informed Palaly police of the find.

Police on obtaining a court order continued excavations at the site and found some more ammunition. The stock of ammunition was unearthed with the assistance of STF commandos. Police suspect the stock of ammunition belonged to the LTTE and they might have buried it there before fleeing the area.

Police said that they would destroy the stock of ammunition after the matter was reported to the court.

Palaly police are conducting further investigations.
