Opposition Leader calls for urgent action to prevent brain drain
Opposition and SJB Leader Sajith Premadasa told Parliament yesterday that the government had to revise its tax policy to prevent university teachers from leaving the country for jobs abroad.
Making a special statement in the House, Premadasa said that the taxes imposed on university teachers were unbearable and it was not surprising that they were leaving the country. There are some university teachers who had been asked to pay more than Rs 100,000 as taxes.
“We call on the Education Minister to do something to remedy this situation.”
Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said that the government had realised that there was a problem pertaining to the tax issues of the university teachers. The government hoped to sort it out with the help of the Departments of Inland Revenue, Treasury and the Ministry of Finance.
