National People’s Power (NPP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake has urged the Muslim community not to fall victim to the tried and tested tactics of the political establishment that aims to divide Sri Lankans.Addressing a rally in Kinniya, Trincomalee, on Thursday, Dissanayake said that Sri Lanka needed to get rid of racism to achieve its development goals.

“However, what do our politicians do? They spread racism. Look at what Ranil is doing now. He is talking about the 13th Amendment to get the votes of the Tamils. Others are allegedly opposing the Amendment to get the votes of the Sinhalese. Don’t fall for these tricks again. They are good friends,” he said.

The NPP leader said that in the run up to the 2019 elections, those supporting Gotabaya Rajapaksa had spread rumours against the Muslims.

“There were rumours that Muslims mixed pills with food sold to the Sinhalese and that Dr. Shafi had damaged the fallopian tubes of Sinhalese women. Then, the so-called Muslim leaders chimed in and got your votes to protect you from the Rajapaksas. However, in Parliament they joined forces for narrow political gain. All of these people are working together to fool the people. Don’t fall for the same trick again.”
