The newly established Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) would approve the construction of a 300MW combined-cycle dual fuel Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) power plant at Kerawalapitiya, allowing Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to commence the project later this month, Engineer Vijitha Herath, the Chairman of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said.

The launch of the project was to take place in January but it got delayed as the members of the PUCSL were asked by the government to resign.

The CEB Chairman said that PUCSL as the power sector regulator would determine whether the construction had conformed to the approved plans and power needs of the country. “Thus there will be no necessity for the opinion of the Attorney General,” he said.

A top official of the CEB told The Island that the letter of intent (LoI) would soon be signed with Lakdhanavi Ltd, which won the tender, for the construction of the 300MW power plant at Kerawalapitiya.
