Nearly 600 prevented from leaving on visit visas for overseas jobs

Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) had prevented 586 persons from leaving the country this year for employment overseas, a spokesman for the Bureau said.The official said that the SLBFE unit based at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) had declined to process their applications as they were leaving the country on visit visas.

The official said that the SLBFE had received instructions from Labour Minister Manusha Nanayakkara to prevent women from leaving for overseas employment on visit visas. Accordingly, the ministerial instructions regarding women going overseas were implemented on Nov 11 this year.

The SLBFE has received quite a number of complaints regarding women who had entered UAE and Oman seeking employment on visit visas. The SLBFE warned public not to be deceived by unscrupulous elements offering foreign job opportunities without qualifications (SF)
