Navy seizes stock of beedi leaves

Kendu leaves taken into custody

The Navy took into custody a stock of 407 kilos (wet weight) of Tendu leaves (also known as beedi leaves) smuggled into the country from India during a search operation at Wellamundalama in Kalpitiya on Saturday.

The search operation was conducted by the ratings attached to the SLNS Vijaya of the Northwestern Naval Command. During the operation, the Navy seized the Tendu leaves hidden in the shrubs. The consignment had been stuffed in 14 sacks.

The stash of Tendu leaves has been kept in the custody of the Navy, until onward legal action is initiated with regard to the incident.
