A parcel containing cocaine, weighing more than a kilo, was found on Wadamarachchi beach in Jaffna on Saturday (8) by Navy personnel attached to the Vettilaikerny base.

The police estimated the street value of the recovered drugs at Rs. 10 million.

The cocaine parcel was found hidden in mangrove shrubs near Katteikaddu on Wadamarachchi beach. The Navy suspects that the contraband was brought from India in a fishing boat.

Naval sources said it was the first time a parcel of cocaine had been found in the area.

The Navy has handed over the cocaine consignment to the Maradankeni Police for further investigation.
