Navy, PNB seize heroin valued at over Rs. 1626 million in southern seas

The Sri Lanka Navy and the Police Narcotics Bureau together with intelligence services carried out  a special operation about 100 nautical miles (185km) off the Dondra Head, in southern waters on Friday  (19th January 2024) morning

During the operation the naval ship intercepted a local fishing trawler on suspicion and a search of the trawler led to the detection of 03 sacks containing 65kg and 076gms of heroin. The five crew members onboard the trawler were taken into custody. It is estimated that the heroin has a street value of over Rupees 1626 million.

The Navy detained a second multi-day fishing trawler with six crew members onboard on suspicion that they were also linked to the illicit drug smuggling racket. The two (02) multi-day fishing trawlers, 11 crew members  and the narcotics were brought to the Galle Harbour this morning (20th January) for onward legal action.
