Navy detain three Indian trawlers and 22 fishermen poaching in Sri Lankan waters

The Sri Lanka Navy conducted a special operation to chase away Indian trawlers from Sri Lankan waters on Saturday night (09th March 2024) and Sunday morning (10th March 2024). The operation led to the detention of three (03) Indian trawlers and the apprehension of 22 Indian fishermen who continued to remain in Sri Lankan waters off the Kovilan Lighthouse in Kareinagar.

The three trawlers together with the 22 Indian fishermen were brought to the Kankesanthurai Harbour and were to be handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for onward legal proceedings.

With this apprehension, the Navy has detained a total of 15 Indian  trawlers and 110 Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan waters in 2024.
