The Sri Lanka Navy has taken into custody 17 Indian trawlers along with 110 of their fishermen so far this year for poaching in Sri Lankan waters.The Navy said that on Wednesday (13) evening it had conducted a special operation to chase away Indian trawlers poaching in Sri Lankan waters.

During the operation three Indian trawlers were taken into custody along with 17 Indian nationals in the seas off the Kakarathivu Island and Kovilan Lighthouse, Jaffna.

The Northern Naval Command deployed the Fast Attack Craft of the 04th Fast Attack squadron during this operation.

Trawlers together with the Indian fishermen had been brought to the Kankesanthurai harbour and they would be handed over to the Fisheries Inspector of Mailadi for legal proceedings, the Navy said.
