National Plan to establish Daycare Centres for children with Autism and Neurodevelopmental disorders

Secretary to the President, Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, instructed relevant officials to submit a conceptual proposal within two weeks for a joint plan to establish a national mechanism for treatment and day-care centres for children with autism and neurodevelopmental disorders.

These instructions were given by the President’s Secretary to the relevant officials during a discussion held on Wednesday (09) afternoon , led by the ‘Prajashakthi’ Secretariat, regarding this programme which is being implemented according to a concept by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. This programme will be implemented by the relevant line ministries and affiliated institutions, with coordination handled by the Presidential Secretariat.

During the discussion, matters such as reallocating Rs. 250 million from the funds allocated to the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs in this year’s budget back to the Treasury and then providing it to District Secretaries through the Department of Social Services, preparing a human resource development plan necessary for operating these day-care centres, and developing a new model with a scientific background for implementing this programme by engaging relevant line ministries and affiliated institutions, were discussed.

Secretary to the President, Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanaayake, further instructed the officials to prepare the conceptual proposal for a mechanism comprising these points within two weeks.

A group including Senior Additional Secretary to the President Kapila Janaka Bandara, Secretary to the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs K.D.R. Olga, Secretary to the Ministry of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment Sampath Manthrinayake, Additional Secretary H.A. Hema Perera, Director of the Department of Social Services Darshani Karunaratne, Ms. Varuni Rasadari, Director of the National Secretariat for Early Childhood Development affiliated with the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs, Consultant Community Physician Dr. Asiri Hewamalage, Deputy Director of Public Health, and Dr. Santhushitha Senadhipathi, Deputy Director of Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, participated.

80th Birthday Celebration

For over 50 years, sister Mary Croospulle of the Congregation of Perpetual Help has been a beacon of compassion across Sri Lanka. Born in 1945, she entered the convent in 1965 and was professed in 1968, embarking on a diverse journey of service that has touched countless lives.

Sister Mary’s mission has been defined by her work with the marginalised. She spent decades empowering the deaf community, notably teaching sewing in Moratuwa and looking after deaf children in Ragama. Her heart for the vulnerable also extended to the elderly, where she managed homes in Thimbirigasyaya and Periyamulla.

Her leadership within the congregation was equally profound. She served as General Bursar for 16 years ( 1991 – 2007) and held roles as Superior and Administrator in several regions, including Gothatuwa and Thimbirigasyaya.

Today, Sister Mary continues her mission in Kalpitiya, teaching Religion and English. Her life remains a powerful testament to the charism of the sisters of Perpetual Help, a journey of tireless hands and a heart dedicated to God.

To mark her birthday, a religious alms-giving ceremony was held recently at the Jayaraj Fernandopulle Memorial Hall in Kandasuridugama.

The Art of Mahagama Sekera: 50th Anniversary Commemorative Exhibition

Fifty years on, Mahagama Sekera (1929 – 1976) – artist, poet, writer, lyricist, playwright, filmmaker – remains one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated and multifaceted artists, whose creative genius continues to inspire generations of art and literary enthusiasts. His diverse and unique body of work, unmatched in the nation’s recent history, opened pathways for emerging Sri Lankan artists to explore creativity without boundaries.

To mark this milestone anniversary, the Alliance Française de Colombo, in collaboration with the Mahagama Sekera Archives, presents The Art of Mahagama Sekera, a commemorative exhibition of Sekera’s creative work in painting.

The exhibition will feature original paintings and reproductions which cover two decades of Sekera’s creative experimentation in form, colour, and texture, expressed through a visual language that is modern in every sense.

The exhibition is open to the public on January 14 and 15 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Alliance Française de Colombo (No. 11, Barnes Place, Colombo 7).

A the opening ceremony, Prof. Arjuna Parakrama will deliver the commemorative lecture, “Their burden did I own”: the patient genius of Mahagama Sekera.

Navy assists in treating wild elephant with gunshot wounds

Navy treating an injured wild elephant

The Navy provided critical support to the Department of Wildlife Conservation for treating an injured wild elephant on Sunday (04).

The intervention came following wildlife veterinarians arrival to treat a wounded wild elephant, found roaming with gunshot injuries within the Kumana Sanctuary, adjacent to SLNS Mahanaga.

Responding swiftly, the Southeastern Naval Command rushed a naval team from SLNS Mahanaga and naval personnel provided necessary assistance to wildlife veterinarians, enabling them to safely administer treatment to the elephant.

The Navy continues to work in close collaboration with the Department of Wildlife Conservation and other relevant institutions to preserve the flora and fauna of Sri Lanka’s natural environment.
