The Oval, in south London, gives every Sri Lankan special memories for it was here they won their first Test match in England, 26 years ago. As you move around the iconic cricket ground, where the first ever Test match in

England was played, there are plaques remembering the momentous occasion.

Off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan was the hero for Sri Lanka claiming 16 wickets in the game. In fact, Murali’s 16 for 220 is the record at The Oval for best figures in Test match cricket.

Murali broke Fred Spofforth’s record that had stood for 116 years.

The milestone for the best bowling figures in an innings by a visiting bowler at The Oval also came in that game when Murali claimed nine for 65.

Murali ran through the England batting line up and could have finished with all ten wickets but Alec Stewart was run out by a direct hit from Upul Chandana.Chandana was doing 12th man duty in that game having come in for Aravinda de Silva. Chandana is the Fielding Coach of the Sri Lankan at the moment.
