More than120 people who attended weddings in violation of the quarantine laws have been arrested in the Northern Province during the past few days.

Over 112 people, who attended a wedding in Thawasikulam, Vavuniya, a few days ago, have been placed under quarantine in the hall where the reception was held. Health officials said that the couple had obtained permission to hold the wedding with the participation of 15 people, but over 100 people had attended the event. Police and PHIs traced the people who had attended the event.

Meanwhile, the PHIs, attached to the Jaffna MC placed 16 people including the bride and groom under observation at their house at Gurunagar.

Head of the Jaffna PHIs said that a number of others had fled the house when they approached and they would be traced with the help of the police.

About 32 people, including four policemen attached to the Point Pedro police station, contracted Covid-19 and were sent to treatment centres.

The health officials also suspended classes at the Vavuniya Nursing School and sent all students home. The school was closed on 14 June. Given that students from across the country attended classes there, they were provided with transport to reach their homes. The school has been closed indefinitely.

Troops stationed in Mullaitivu provided assistance to 100 vulnerable families living in Oddusuddan, Mullaitivu.
