CCD in the dock

Prompt action would be taken against proposed irregular constructions at the Mawella Bay, Environment Minister Amaraweera said yesterday. He said the matter would be thoroughly investigated by ministry officials.
Any violation of environment laws would be severely dealt with, he said. Property owners around the Mawella Bay in Tangalle claim that the Coast Conservation Department (CCD) wants to build a breakwater in Mawella Bay. However, the Initial Environmental Examination (IEE), done on the request of the CCD is insufficient for the construction of the breakwaters, they claim.
Residents say there are three studies that show coastal constructions cause the erosion of adjacent areas and are not a long term solution to the problem of sea erosion.
Sri Lanka Tourism has requested the Fisheries Ministry and the CCD to consult all stakeholders. There are 40 property owners in the Mawella Bay area, and they include more than 20 foreign investors.
