Mahinda predicts doom for UNP if …

SLPP leader and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday said that elections must not be postponed. Asked by reporters what he thought of the UNP’s efforts to put off the upcoming Presidential Election, Rajapaksa said the UNP would be doomed in such an eventuality.
Speaking to the media, after an SLPP meeting held in Colombo, the former President said that he did not think that the UNP would ever put off any elections. “The Presidential Election has to be held as per the Constitution. It cannot be put off. I do not think that the UNP would do such a stupid thing, because that would result in that party’s end,” Rajapaksa said.
Asked to name his party’s candidate for the presidential polls, Rajapaksa said that the name would be revealed in time to come.
He said breakaways were common in politics, and Nimal Lanza’s exit would not affect the SLPP. “Our victory is certain. There are certain developments and that is the nature of politics. Come what may we will win the next election,” he said.
