Javelin National record holder Dilhani Lekamge flexed her muscle ahead of the Asian Games to win the best athlete title of the Army Volunteer Force Athletics Championships concluded at Diyagama on Thursday.

The athlete trained by Pradeep Nishantha threw the javelin to a distance of 59.39 metres, which is just one and half metres short of her National Record established at the recently held Asian Athletics Championships.

“I had planned to compete at the Army Meet ahead of the Asian Games. As there were only few competitors there were only three throws. I am now confident ahead of the Asian Games,” said Lekamge in an interview with The Island yesterday.

Her winning performance is better than that of the bronze winning feat of the last Asian Games though that doesn’t guarantee a medal at this year’s edition.

She is set to depart for the quadrennial event later next week. The Games was scheduled to commence officially today.Meanwhile, Isuru Lakshan of SLEME won the best athlete title in the men’s category of the Army Meet with a time of 46.80 seconds in the men’s 400 metres.
