Lanka attracts Russian tourists amidst Western travel warnings

Sri Lanka’s former Ambassador in Moscow, Udayanga Weeratunga ,yesterday (28) announced that this week Russian tourists would begin arriving at the Mattala International Airport.

Weeratunga said that the first group left Domodedovo Airport, in Moscow, on board Red Wings airline flight WZ 3077 yesterday afternoon. According to him, six flights would be operated from six airports in Russia to Mattala, on a weekly basis, under an agreement worked with relevant parties.

Weeratunga said that Exotic Holidays International and Aitken Spence Travels would be involved in the overall planning, along with Russian tour operators ANEX and FUN & SUN. Udayanga said that Tropical Aviation Services were the local agents for Red Wings airline and they have finalized arrangements to bring in 68,000 tourists fromRussia during this season.

Weeratunga said that of them, 99% would be foreigners and the project could generate as much as USD 100 mn (SF)
