The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has deployed two volunteers to the island nation under the World Friends Korea (WFK) Program to bolster Sri Lanka’s educational and technological capacity, said a KOICA release.

This marks the 80th batch of volunteers since the programme’s inception in 1991.

The newly arrived volunteers, Kim Hyeog and Lee Gookpil, are set to make valuable contributions to the Sri Lanka’s education system. Kim will join the Technical College in Matara, while Lee will serve at Sujatha Vidyalaya, also in Matara. Both volunteers will take up roles as computer education instructors, bringing their expertise to local students to enhance career development prospects and contribute to the community’s overall upliftment.

After completing local adaptation training in Colombo, the two volunteers are expected to begin their duties at their respective institutions today (15).

The WFK Program, one of KOICA’s flagship initiatives, continues to be a cornerstone of the agency’s partnership with Sri Lanka. Currently, several KOICA volunteers are working in various sectors across the country, with more set to arrive in the coming months. All volunteer activities are in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and align with Sri Lanka’s development priorities.

KOICA, the grant aid arm of the Republic of Korea’s Embassy, operates with the core mission of “Leave no one behind with People-centered Peace and Prosperity.” Since its establishment in 1991, the KOICA Sri Lanka Office has played a crucial role in supporting the country’s socio-economic development through various volunteer programmes, development projects, and fellowship initiatives. The office remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting vulnerable communities in Sri Lanka, helping them navigate the country’s current socio-economic challenges.
