Kananathan in Chad for investiture of new president
Ambassador ‘Kana’ Kananathan, Sri Lanka’s envoy in Kenya, last week attended the investiture ceremony of Chad’s new President, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, at N’Djamena, the capital of Chad.
After the ceremony, Ambassador Kananathan personally congratulated President Déby, emphasizing their longstanding friendship and mutual respect. He conveyed his heartfelt congratulations and highlighted the strengthening bond between Sri Lanka and Chad.
Kananathan remarked, “Today is a significant day for Chad and its people. As a close friend and ally, I am proud to support President Déby as he begins this new chapter of leadership.”
President Mahamat Idriss Déby assumed power three years ago following the death of his father, Idriss Déby, who had ruled Chad with an iron fist for three decades. Although Déby Jr. initially promised to hold elections within 18 months, his government postponed the elections and permitted him to run for president.
Chad was the first among several countries in the region to experience coups over the past four years and subsequently hold elections.Ambassador Kananathan’s attendance at this event underscores the ongoing strong diplomatic relations and lasting friendship between Sri Lanka and Chad.
Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) ASAHI arrived at the Port of Colombo on a replenishment visit this morning (01 Mar 25).
The visiting ship was welcomed by the Sri Lanka Navy in compliance with naval traditions.
JMSDF ASAHI is a 151m long destroyer commanded by Commander Shota TAKASHIRO. She is manned by a crew of 202.
During the stay in Colombo, crew members of the ship are expected to visit some tourist attractions in the city limits and the ship is scheduled to depart the island on 03 Mar 25.
D.J. Rajakaruna, Chairman of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC), addressing the media explained that the current fuel issue was due to some fuel distributors disagreeing with the governments decision to introduce a new formula on which their commission will be based.
The CPC chairman said that there was no shortage of fuel. and that the Corporation has received 2924 fuel orders at that time and was in a position to accept more.
Nevertheless, some fuel stations were closed today [01] while there were long queues at the ones which were open.
Veteran Sri Lankan actress Susantha Chandramali has passed away at the age of 61.
She will be remembered for her rolls in Saroja, Jaya Pita Jaya, Ran Kevita, Nidahase Piya DS, Charulatha, Sujatha, and Kande Gedara.
