JVP warns of food scarcity
by Sanath Nanayakkare
JVP’s Vijitha Herath says a food shortage is imminent as Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage is using his brawn and not brains.
Herath said so while taking part in an agricultural event with a group of farmers at Nittambuwa yesterday.
Speaking to the media, Herath stressed the importance of distributing organic fertiliser to farmers according to their farming needs and not as the authorities wished.
“The government still doesn’t have a proper mechanism in place to supply organic fertiliser to farmers. As a result, the production of local produce has already reduced which may lead to a widespread scarcity of food in the near future,” he said.
“Minister Aluthgamage thinks muscle will work. The same Minister told us that a single grain of rice would be imported. He is still the Minister of Agriculture and now they are importing rice without any shame. The country has no use for an Agriculture Minister who only pays lip service to uplifting agriculture and raising the living standards of farmers,” he said.
