Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara announced in Parliament on Thursday (20) that armed officers will be deployed inside courtrooms to ensure the security of high-risk detainees during legal proceedings.

Responding to a verbal question raised by Kalutara District MP Rohitha Abeygunawardena, the Minister stated that armed officers are currently not assigned within courtrooms, which poses a security risk. He noted that on Wednesday, an armed assailant gained access to a Hulftsdorp court by disguising himself as a lawyer.

As a result, a special committee will be appointed to consult all relevant stakeholders and establish armed security measures inside court premises when high-risk detainees are brought before the courts.

The Minister stressed the importance of introducing enhanced security screening procedures. He said discussions would be held with the Judicial Service Commission, the Police, and the Bar Association to ensure the necessary safeguards are in place to strengthen security within court premises.

He also highlighted concerns regarding the safety of prison officers, stating that special attention would be given to their welfare and salaries, aligning them more closely with those in the police service.

Additionally, the Minister revealed plans to amend the Criminal Procedure Code to eliminate the need for high-risk detainees to be physically present in court. Instead, legal provisions will be introduced to facilitate testimonies via video link, allowing detainees to participate in court proceedings remotely from their holding facilities.
