Isipatana and St. Peter’s clear super round hurdles at rugby

Isipatana and St. Peter’s cleared their first set of matches in the super round stage of the interschool league rugby tournament on Saturday (August 10) in Colombo.

Isipatana had a close clash at Havelock Park in their Major Milroy Fernando trophy game against Royal which was also considered as a tournament match by the authorities. Isipatana won the game 19- 18, thanks to the efforts of fly half Shaahid Zumri who contributed with 17 points. The green shirts collected their points through one try, one conversion and four penalties while Royal responded with two tries, one conversion and two penalties. Isipatana led by 3 points to nil at half time.

Isipatana’s win was largely made possible by the efforts of Zumri who booted across the match winning penalty during the final 10 minutes of the game. Thineth Gamage and Akira Yatawara were outstanding for Royal and scored a try each.

Royal’s next super round game is on August 17 against Trinity which will also serve as their traditional game which is played for the Bradby Shield. This match will be played at Royal Sports Complex in Colombo.

Meanwhile, St. Peter’s managed to defuse a charge by Trinity at their home ground in Bambalapitiya. The Peterites recorded a 37 points to 28 win in this game with Vishenka Silva scoring twice during the game. The Peterites collected their points through five tries, three conversions and two penalties while Trinity responded with three tries, two conversions and three penalties. Yevan Hulangamuwa was outstanding for Trinity scoring 13 points which came off two conversions and three penalties.

The Peterites have their next game in the super round scheduled on August 17 against Isipatana in Colombo. Both teams are unbeaten thus far in the tournament.

St. Peter’s are the defending champions of the league tournament.
