Is everything OK with Port City?
President’s Counsel Romesh de Silva, appearing on behalf of President’s Secretary in answering several questions by the judges, has said he will recommend making amendments to Port City Economic Commission Bill. Parties opposing this Bill say that the government wanted to table the bill, surreptitiously, using the continuous holidays from April 8 to 14 (April 12 was made a special holiday) leaving only one working day to file objections in courts. If those parties could not file objections, Parliament with the government’s majority would have passed the bill as it was and the clauses that PC de Silva agreed should be amended would have been ratified.
Whatever happens to this Bill, whether it is amended or discarded as a whole, the country must find some way to use the Port City. The government says foreign entrepreneurs will open their establishments here and it will ring enough foreign exchange for the country to get out of the present debt situation. Great encouraging news! Here, can I get clear a little doubt I have, when China is playing a big role here (Port City), will some countries prefer to have their businesses there?
