Heavy showers about 100mm are likely at some places in Southern, Central, Eastern and Uva provinces

Weather forecast issued at 05.30 a.m. on 14 May 2024 by the Department of Meteorology

Due to a low-level atmospheric disturbance in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, showery condition is expected to  continue further.

Showers may occur at Western and Southern provinces during the morning while showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in most provinces of the island after 1.00 p.m. Heavy showers about 100mm are likely at some places in Southern, Central, Eastern and Uva provinces.

Winds will be south-westerly or variable and wind speed will be (20-30) kmph

The sea areas around the island will be slight but strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces and in Galle, Matara and Kalutara districts during the early hours of the morning.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at some places in Southern province and in Ampara, Batticaloa and Monaragala districts in the morning while showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, North-western and Uva provinces and in Ampara, Batticaloa and Polonnaruwa districts after 1.00 p.m. Fairly heavy showers about 75 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces and in Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts. Dry weather will prevail over the other parts of the island.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The Heat index, the temperature felt on the human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at some places in the Northern, North-central, North-western, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and Eastern provinces and Monaragala district.

The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.

Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the above table and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.

ACTION REQUIRED

Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated.
Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.
