Govt. to explain delay in arresting Easter Sunday carnage masterminds
Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananda Wijayapala is scheduled to explain to the House today the reasons for the delay in apprehending the masterminds behind the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks, which claimed over 260 lives.
Minister Wijayapala is listed to respond to a question raised by Puttalam District NPP MP Ajith Gihan, as per today’s Order Paper.
MP Gihan has asked whether the Minister acknowledges that those responsible for the attacks have yet to be brought before the law, despite the passage of nearly six years. The question also highlights the expectations of the Catholic Church, led by the Cardinal, along with other religious leaders, who have voiced concerns about the lack of progress in ensuring that the masterminds and other individuals linked to the attacks are held accountable.
In addition, MP Gihan has called on the Minister to inform Parliament about the steps being taken to bring the individuals, associated with the attack, to justice and ensure fairness for the victims. If no such steps are underway, the MP has requested an explanation for the delay.
