GMOA threatens union action if grievances remain unresolved

General Secretary of the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA), Dr. Prabath Sugathadasa Thursday warned that doctors will resort to trade union actions if the government fails to address their grievances, particularly regarding doctors’ allowances, during the third reading of the Budget proposals.
Dr. Sugathadasa made these comments after a meeting with Asgiriya Mahanayake Ven. Varakagoda Sri Gnananarathana Thera and Malwatte Mahanayake Ven. Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thera in Kandy. Speaking to the media, he emphasized that if the government does not make necessary amendments to the Budget, the GMOA will be compelled to take union action.
He also highlighted the recent tragic incident at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital, which has caused significant unrest among doctors, nurses, and healthcare staff across the country. Dr. Sugathadasa expressed concern over the government’s inability to ensure the safety of healthcare professionals, questioning how they can continue to work in such an insecure environment. He stressed that the government must acknowledge the vital contributions of doctors, and failure to do so would create a serious issue for the healthcare sector.
Dr. Sugathadasa further revealed that the GMOA plans to initiate national-level discussions on these concerns. He warned that if the government does not provide satisfactory solutions soon, the association will have no choice but to escalate their actions through trade union measures.
