FSP says it never called for cancellation of monthly passes for train commuters

The Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) Education Secretary, Pubudu Jayagoda, on Sunday denied reports that his party had proposed the cancellation of monthly passes for train commuters as a means of making the railway profitable.

“Our Propaganda Secretary Duminda Nawagamuwa said that cancellation of railway season passes and a significant increase in train fares were the means adopted by the neo-liberals to make public transport profitable,” he said.

Jayagoda said that for decades Sri Lankan governments had provided subsidised services to the people. However, in recent years taxes and tariffs had been increased drastically to make the state-owned ventures profitable.
