By Norman Palihawadane
Five police teams from three different units, including the Weliveriya Police, have launched an extensive investigation into an incident involving a shooting and injury that occurred on the night of 13 March, near the Araliygasdaka junction, in Weliweriya
Police said that a 26-year-old resident of Udugampola, who was travelling in a vehicle at the time of the incident, is currently receiving treatment at the Gampaha District General Hospital for gunshot wounds.
Police mentioned that the individual was injured on his left arm as a result and, after being shot, continued driving the vehicle without stopping, heading towards the hospital.
The investigation further revealed that two unknown individuals, who arrived on a motorcycle, fired shots at the victim with a 9mm pistol before fleeing the scene.
Police have also uncovered that the injured individual is someone who operates a van service, transporting tourists.
As part of their inquiry into the case, police are now investigating whether the shooting was a result of a personal dispute or a money-related issue.
As of yesterday evening, the suspects involved in the shooting had not been apprehended.
Further investigations are being carried out, under the guidance of Weliveriya OIC Chief Inspector Sumith Gunawardena.
