By Norman Palihawadane
The Navy on Saturday escorted to the Galle Harbour a local fishing trawler intercepted on the high seas while it was carrying around 131 kilos of heroin with a street value of Rs. 3,250 million. The naval operation was carried out about 700 km off Devinuwara.
Six suspects were taken into custody.
Navy Commander Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera and senior officers visited the Galle Harbour on Saturday to inspect the haul of narcotics.
The raid was carried out on a tip-off received by the Sri Lanka Coast Guard. The local multi-day fishing trawler was intercepted by SLNS vessel Parakramabahu.
The suspects are residents of Devinuwara and Gandara. They, together with the heroin and the fishing trawler, would be handed over to the Police Narcotic Bureau for onward legal action, the Navy said.
