One-time Chief of State Intelligence Service (SIS) DIG (retd) Chandra Wakishta has been appointed a member of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).

Other Commissioners are retired Supreme Court Justice Eva Wanasundera (Chairperson) and retired Appeals Court Justice Deepali Wijesundera. In terms of Section 2 (2) (a) of Act No 19 of 1994, the Commission consists of two retired judges of the SC or Court of Appeal and an experienced investigator.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa named the new Commission in terms of the recently adopted 20th Amendment to the Constitution.

The new team replaced Justices Lal Ranjith Silva and T.B. Weerasuriya and retired SSP Neville Guruge.

Retired High Court judge Kanishka Wijeratne who succeeded Sarath Jayamanne, PC, as the Director General of the CIABOC in January 2020 will continue as DG.

Sarath Jayamanne was brought in late 2016 after the then President Maithripala Sirisena lambasted DG, CIABOC Dilrukshi Dias Wickramasinghe over her handling of some controversial cases. Wickramasinghe also with the Attorney General’s Department quit the CIABOC. Subsequently she figured in leaked audio tapes of UNP lawmaker Ranjan Ramanayake (SF)
