Elvis, Michael, Tina …all in one!
I guess many of you would find it hard to believe that one person can incorporate…or, let’s say, impersonate three different acts at any given time!
However, those who have heard of Kirthie Abeywickreme will acknowledge the fact that Kirthie is the only guy who can do it, and do it exceedingly well.
I’ve known Kirthie for quite a while now, when he was very active in the local showbiz scene; he is now based in Germany and operates as a professional musician/entertainer.
The last time I saw him do his three-in-one act was at the Monarch Imperial, in Thalawathugoda, at a sing-along event. He turned up, with a friend, and went into action, backed by Sohan & The X-Periments.
Wow! The crowd loved it.
What makes Kirthie standout is the outfit he wears for each act; the Elvis look, Michael Jackson…and the moonwalk brought in, as well, and then a sexy looking short outfit to highlight Tina Turner.
In Germany, he has his Action Show Band, called Kit ‘N’ Sunrise.
The band comprises Anura Herat – ex-Moonstones (bass guitar), Kirthie Abeywickreme – ex-Des and The Clan (lead guitar), Susantha Perera – ex-Desmond and The Clan (keyboards and sax) and Musha Yehiya – ex-Steelers (drums).
Says Kirthie: ‘We now have work coming our way and we have started to perform at some of the same old night clubs where we used to play, in Germany, before the Covid issue cropped up.
“We were left without work for almost two years, but the German political system helped those self-employed, and musicians, in a big way.”
Referring to his talent as an impersonator, he says: “Thank God I still can move my froggy legs to do the funny side of stars, imitating Jacko, Tina and Elvis.
“I’m looking forward to going on until I reach the point where I cannot stand firmly on stage, anymore.”
Being an ex-member of the late Desmond de Silva’s band, The Clan, Kirthie had this to say:
‘My hero, Desmond de Silva Silva, celebrated his 78th birthday, in heaven, on 13th July 2022.
“Missing him are millions of his friends and fans, all over the world, but, most of all, his loving wife Phyllis and family.
“I love you, Des, and we are all missing you very much.”
