The decision by the Department of Immigration and Emigration to discontinue the issuance of Emergency Certificates (EC Passports) has caused considerable difficulties for many individuals.
The Emergency Certificate, which permitted travel solely to India and Nepal, was extensively used by the people visiting India and seeking medical treatment in there. For many years, this certificate was available for a modest fee of Rs. 500.
Individuals who previously used this certificate to travel to India are now required to pay Rs. 10,000 to obtain a passport valid for travel to all countries. This change has shattered the hopes of those planning pilgrimages or seeking medical care in India.
In response to this issue, the Association of Dambadiva Pilgrimage Organisers has requested a meeting with the President and relevant authorities to express their concerns.
