Consumers warned against unapproved measuring instruments

The Measurement Units, Standards & Services Department issued a warning to consumers on Thursday (22nd) to exercise caution when purchasing scales and measuring instruments from the open market.

In a public notice, Director S.N. Akuranthilaka highlighted the availability of various unbranded and unapproved measuring instruments in the local market, many of which are being imported through online platforms.

As per current regulations, all weights, measures, and measuring equipment must receive prior approval from the Department before being introduced into the local market, Akuranthilaka stated.

Reports indicate that a range of weighing and measuring equipment are being brought into the country via online methods, prompting the public to remain vigilant when buying these items.

Only approved weights and measuring equipment, which are accompanied by a pink verification certificate bearing the state emblem, are legally permitted for sale. This certificate is valid for a period of one year.

Furthermore, it is mandatory for these items to carry an embossed lead seal displaying the month and year of certification, along with an inspector’s endorsement.

Director Akuranthilaka also stressed that the use of uncertified weights, measures, and measuring equipment constitutes a punishable offence.
