Colombo University alumnus gifts luxury bus to Science Faculty
At a simple ceremony held recently at College House of the University of Colombo, M/S Multiform Chemicals (Pvt) Ltd, through its Chairman Mr. Thilak Karunaratne, former president of the Alumni Association of the University of Colombo and Council Member of the University, donated a new 33-seater air conditioned luxury passenger bus to the Faculty of Science of the University of Colombo.
Vice Chancellor Professor Chandrika N. Wijeyaratne accepted the keys to the bus from Karunaratne. The Dean of the Faculty of Science, Professor Upul Sonnadara, President of the Alumni Association Mr. Rajeev Amarasuriya, the Registrar Mr. K.A.S. Edward, Bursar Mrs. S. Jayasooriya, members of the academic & administrative staff and alumni were present on this occasion.
The Vice Chancellor expressed the university’s gratitude to Mr. Karunaratne and his family for their generous gift. She acknowledged their sincerity in filling a long-felt need in the academic schedules of the Faculty of Science to enable student field visits.
The commitment of alumni in the development of the University will inspire the student body to value their Alma Mater throughout their life. The Dean of Science said this was the largest contribution received by the faculty from a single donor.
Alumni President Rajeev Amarasuriya said that Karunaratne has been a benefactor of the University of Colombo for many years. They greatly appreciated his newest gift to the Science Faculty for the use of students and staff.
He called on other alumni to take a cue from Mr. Karunaratne and give back to the University of Colombo, when possible.
“We have received so much from the University, we must give back whenever possible,” he said.

Amendment of the Inland Revenue Act No. 24 of 2017
Approval of the Cabinet of Ministers has been granted at their meeting held on 19.05.2025 in order to introduce amendments to the Inland Revenue Act No. 24 of 2017 including the proposed tax revisions to enhance the tax structure paving way for state financial integrity based on revenue.
Accordingly, the revised draft bill has been prepared by the legal draftsman and clearance of the Attorney General has been received.
Therefore, the Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval for
the resolution furnished by the President in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, Policy Planning and Economic Development to publish the aforementioned draft bill in the government gazette notification and subsequently, forward the same to the Parliament for its concurrence.

Cabinet nod for “National Mineral Policy” – 2026
The National Mineral Policy was prepared for the first time in the year 1999, and the aforementioned policy has been amended in 2023 to cover matters such as preparing an updated data system related to mineral resources, adding value to the export of minerals, encouraging mineral-related industrialists, extracting mineral resources and managing the environment sustainably, and resolving the issues related to the ownership of the land arising in extracting mineral resources.
The revised National Mineral Policy has been reupdated in line with the manifesto “A Sustainable Resource Utilization – Generation of the Highest Benefit” under the policy statement of the current government” A Thriving Nation – A Beautiful Life.”
Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the resolution presented by the Minister of Industries and
Entrepreneurship to implement the so-formulated “National Mineral Policy—2026.”
