Colombo and Gampaha Districts epicenters of current coronavirus spread – Sudarshini

The number of COVID-19 cases reported from Colombo and Gampaha districts had increased significantly recently, State Minister of Primary Health Care, Epidemics, and COVID-19 Disease Control Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle told the media.

She said that from the beginning of the pandemic those two districts had been the worst affected. This is a good indication of how things went wrong.

Dr. Fernandopulle said that health officials believed that already close to 50% of the cases currently reported were of the Omicron variant and many infected people were asymptomatic.

“Some might think this is a good thing. However, there are many vulnerable populations in Sri Lanka like the elderly and those suffering from other long-term and non-communicable diseases. If an asymptomatic person comes into contact with these people, they can be seriously affected,” she said.

Given those developments, taking the booster shot was extremely important, she said.
