CME to resume work to full capacity: Workers asked to report for duty
by SURESH PERERA
Despite the temporary disruption of work at the Central Mail Exchange (CME) due to the Covid-19 related lockdown of the Colombo Fort-Pettah areas, there’s no big backlog of mail as sorting and delivery were handled by regional postal divisions, Postmaster General Ranjith Ariyaratne.
A considerable segment of workers could not report for duty due to the restrictions resulting in the CME not being able to work to full capacity, he said.
As most workers come from Gampaha district, Galle, Matara and Kandy, they could not report for duty due to the restrictions, he noted.
Those who were on duty had to work throughout to keep the mail moving as far as possible, he added.
“As the night mail trains have been cancelled, we are using our fleet of vehicles to transport mail to the various points”, Ariyaratne further said.
“We have now asked all employees, except those living in areas isolated due to the pandemic, to report for duty as all necessary preventive guidelines are being observed”, the PMG said.
