Chile issues tsunami warning after 7.4 magnitude earthquake
In a post on X, Chilean President Gabriel Boric said: “We call for evacuation of the coastline throughout the Magallanes region.”
More than 1,700 people have been evacuated to higher ground in the sparsely-populated Magallanes region so far, including 1,000 from the town of Puerto Williams and 500 from Puerto Natales, according to Chile’s disaster agency (Senapred).
Some 32 people also followed evacuation procedures in Chile’s Antarctic research bases, Senapred added.
The agency advised residents to “act calmly and follow the instructions of authorities and response teams”.
It has issued its highest level of alert for disasters, meaning all resources will be mobilised to respond.
Miguel Ortiz, Senapred’s deputy director of emergency management, said people should “remain evacuated in the safety zone”.
Footage posted on social media, as yet unverified by the BBC, showed people calmly heading for higher ground in Puerto Williams, with sirens blaring in the background.
Local media is reporting that this is a precautionary measure, with residents being asked to evacuate to safe areas which are 30m above sea level.
The earthquake struck the Drake Passage between Cape Horn and Antarctica at a depth of 10km (6 miles), the US Geological Survey said.
In Argentina, the earthquake was felt primarily in Ushuaia, with other towns affected “to a lesser extent”, the office for the governor of the region said.
There have been no reports of material damage of people affected so far, the statement added.

Shafali, Renuka close in on top five in ICC T20I rankings
India’s opening batter Shafali Verma and swing bowler Renuka Singh have moved up to sixth spots in the ICC’s T20I batting and bowling rankings respectively.
Shafali is the leading scorer in the ongoing bilateral series against Sri Lanka by a distance, her 236 runs nearly twice as many as second-highest scorer Smriti Mandhana’s 120. Renuka is also the leading wicket-taker, her four wickets level with team-mates Deepti Sharma, Vaishnavi Sharma and Shree Charani.
Shafali went up four places with back-to-back scores of 69*, 79* and 79 in the second, third and fourth T20Is. Renuka, meanwhile, climbed eight places to reach the joint-sixth position along with South Africa’s Nonkululeko Mlaba, particularly through her 4 for 21 in the third game of the series. Deepti leads the bowlers’ rankings after taking that position last week. Both Shafali and Renuka have also bagged one Player-of-the-Match award each in the series that India lead 4-0, with the last match scheduled for Tuesday in Thiruvananthapuram.
If India win today (30), this will be their third 5-0 series win in T20Is. They won by that scoreline in the West Indies in 2019 and in Bangladesh last year. Sri Lanka have, however, never before lost a T20I series 5-0.
