Chief Justice Murdu Fernando sworn in

Justice Murdu Nirupa Bidushinie Fernando was sworn in yesteday (02) as the 48th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka before President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat.

Justice Fernando succeeds Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, who recently retired, bringing with her decades of legal expertise and public service experience.

Beginning her career at the Attorney General’s Department in 1985, she rose through its ranks, serving as Deputy Solicitor General in 1997 and Additional Solicitor General in 2014. In March 2018, she was appointed to the Supreme Court, where she has been a key figure in shaping the nation’s legal landscape as its most senior Justice. Her tenure at the Attorney General’s Department, including her role as Senior Additional Solicitor General, highlights a distinguished career dedicated to the rule of law.

Justice Fernando holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo. Her academic foundation and professional trajectory reflect her commitment to upholding justice and the integrity of the judiciary.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Secretary to the President, Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, and other officials.
