Leader of the House, Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, says that due to the Standing Orders of Parliament being changed by the previous Yahapalana government, about 40 private members’ bills have been blocked.

This has obstructed the privileges of the Members of Parliament which they have enjoyed since 1948 to incorporate religious, welfare and professional organizations as a private act, as per the Standing Orders of the Parliament.

Members of Parliament have also complained to the Speaker of Parliament that the previous government has changed the Standing Orders of the Parliament in 2018 and thereby violated the privileges of the Members of Parliament.

Minister Gunawardena said that steps are being taken to restore the Standing Orders changed by the previous Government to their previous status by drawing the attention of Parliament in this regard.

He pointed out that some of these bills have not been presented to the Standing Orders Committee for more than four years.
