Celebrating sustainability and creativity with HSBC Premier

Invites Junior Premier account holders to submit creative drawings that envision a sustainable future for everyone
To help inculcate the core principles of creating a more sustainable future in HSBC’s journey towards net zero, HSBC Sri Lanka has launched a creative art competition that invites all its existing Premier Junior account holders from different age groups to submit a drawing that illustrates their vision for the future of the planet, whilst also encouraging them to think responsibly about managing their own carbon footprint.
Stuart Rogers, Interim CEO for HSBC Sri Lanka and Maldives said, “The transition to net zero is one of the key pillars of the bank’s strategy. This means our engagement and commitment will be for the long-haul and that’s why we believe that whether you’re an individual, family or business, the planet we live in provides for us in every way; however, the footprint we leave behind creates larger ripples that harm it. We are excited to engage our next generation through this competition so that we can inculcate sustainable thinking and encourage them to think about their own carbon footprint and how they envision the net zero future from their perspective.”
The competition is open to all HSBC Premier Junior account holders in Sri Lanka aged from 6 – 18 years, to share their drawings based on the following four themes;
Sustainable Planet Responsibly interacting with the planet today to avoid harming it tomorrow Sustainable Work
Responsibly innovating on products and services that have the least or zero impact on the planet. Sustainable Living Responsibly planning your lifestyle for the future, so that it remains secure from external factors. Sustainable Supply Chains Responsibly carrying out sourcing of raw materials for production with the least environmental impact To qualify entries must reach their family’s Premier Relationship Manager on or before the 20th November 2021. Selected entries will be chosen to be featured in the HSBC Sri Lanka 2022 desk calendar, and the winners will also get a special gift pack of art supplies.
This comes in the backdrop of the recent COP26, the UN global climate summit that further highlighted key actions by HSBC to become carbon-neutral by 2030, and to help its customers do the same by 2050. HSBC has committed USD750 billion and USD1 trillion over the next 9 years to help businesses, customers and their communities make that green transition and reduce the impact on this planet.
Through the bank’s business plan for the planet, HSBC is committed to partnering with individuals and businesses to help drive a sustainable future while placing the focus on three areas: helping customers transition to net zero carbon emissions; scaling up new technologies; and building global partnerships to create common standards.
The bank notes that businesses need a partner with the understanding, the capabilities and the resources to help them make the transition to a sustainable model, and HSBC can become their partner, to provide them with the financial assistance needed to make that happen. SIA warns of 1,000 SME collapses, urges fair policies to protect Sri Lanka’s rooftop solar sector

By Sanath Nanayakkare
The Solar Industries Association (SIA), representing over 1,000 companies and employing 40,000 workers in Sri Lanka’s rooftop solar sector, issued a stern warning recently regarding threats to the industry’s survival and the nation’s renewable energy ambitions. The association condemned recent regulatory instability and called for urgent policy reforms to avert economic and social crises.
The SIA categorically rejected the Ceylon Electricity Board’s (CEB) claim that rooftop solar installations caused the recent island-wide power outage, calling the accusation “baseless and misleading.”
“Public trust is eroded when accountability is misdirected,” the SIA stated. “We demand an independent, transparent investigation led by experts appointed by the Ministry or the Public Utilities Commission (PUCSL). The CEB’s unilateral statements disregard the sector’s contributions and jeopardize Sri Lanka’s renewable energy transition,” they said.
“While acknowledging the formation of a tariff determination committee, the SIA criticized its narrow focus on financial parameters, ignoring the sector’s socioeconomic value. Rooftop solar empowers businesses and households with energy independence, reduces grid strain, and supports climate goals. However, proposed volatile tariff structures risk destabilizing over 100,000 installations—primarily owned by middle-class families—and deter future investment,” they noted.
“A rigid, equation-based tariff system is unsustainable,” the association warned. “Sri Lanka needs a stable policy framework to attract long-term investments. For instance, retirees could invest EPF savings into solar projects, securing income while advancing national energy targets. Without urgent action, 1,000 SMEs and 40,000 jobs face collapse, with dire consequences for employment, energy security, and economic stability,” they pointed out.
SIA urged policymakers to establish an independent committee to investigate the power outage fairly, expand the tariff committee’s mandate to include socioeconomic and environmental benefits and implement predictable policies to safeguard SMEs, households, and investor confidence.
“Sri Lanka stands at a crossroads,” the SIA emphasized. “Protecting rooftop solar isn’t just about energy—it’s about livelihoods, economic resilience, and a sustainable future. We urge stakeholders to collaborate on solutions that prioritize both people and progress,: they emphasized.
