Power Minister Gamini Lokuge told Parliament yesterday that the CEB was in crisis due to unpaid bills which amounted to Rs 440 million during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The minister said that a one-year grace period had been granted to consumers to pay the outstanding bills.

He said that a special circular to that effect had been issued.

The minister said so in answer to a question raised by SJB Colombo District MP Mujibur Rahman.

MP Rahman said that a large number of persons had lost their livelihoods owing to the pandemic and asked whether the government would provide some relief to those who had lost their source of income.

The MP said that electricity had been discontinued to a large number of electricity consumers in the Colombo district.
