By Norman Palihawadane
The Colombo Crime Division has recorded statements from three prison officers on alleged death threats MP Rishad Bathiudeen issued to a doctor at the Welikada Prison Hospital.
Statements have been obtained from 10 persons regarding the investigation being conducted by the Prisons Department.
Among those who have so far given statements are the MP, the doctor, several officers of the Magazine Prison and several inmates. These statements have been recorded on a court order and further investigations are to be conducted accordingly.
The incident took place when the MP Rishad Bathiudeen in remand custody came to the Magazine Prison Dispensary for treatment.
Investigations are underway following a complaint lodged by the doctor with the Borella Police.
The doctor has said in his complaint that when asked the MP to wait for his turn, the latter scolded him and issued a death threat.
The Chief Medical Officer of the Welikada Prison Hospital has informed the Prisons Department in writing regarding the incident.
There are allegations that prison authorities initially ignored the doctor’s complaint.
