Cancellation of LG polls nominations costs over Rs. 1 bn — PAFFREL
The People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) says a ministerial consultative committee’s decision to cancel the local government polls nominations will cause a loss of more than one billion rupees to the state coffers.
PAFFREL Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi told the media that the decision to cancel the nominations in the backdrop of an ongoing economic crisis was ill-advised.
Hettiarachchi said that the Election Commission of Sri Lanka had already allocated substantial funds for the 2023 LG polls.On Wednesday (20), the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Council, and Local Government unanimously decided to cancel the LG polls nominations.
