Bribery Commission corrects erroneous view about work of the Commission put out by Minister
By Chaminda Silva
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) had filed 413 cases with the Colombo Magistrates’ and the High Court during the first five years of its existence, Deputy Director general of CIABOC, S. Jayasinghe told The Island on Wednesday.
The Commission was established on 15 December 1994. Minister of Justice, Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe recently told the media that CIABOC had only filed one case in the first five years of its existence.
When questioned by The Island, Jayasinghe denied this allegation.Jayasinghe said that several media institutions had called the CIABOC a white elephant based on the minister’s statements.
“However, these are irresponsible statements,” she said.
Jayasinghe said that the Commission had been filing cases against corrupt individuals in the state sector throughout its history and that the frequency of filing cases had increased from 2015.
