Ayurvedic claims, not backed with research

Many are the stories now gone viral where the authorities in charge stands ridiculed as such claims have not had any scientific proof in this day and age where much has taken place, especially in the field of medicine.

Against this backdrop, Dr. Upul Wijayawardhana, an eminent Cardiologist, who did us proud, later in the UK, too, now in well-earned retirement, has made a valuable contribution. I trust those in authority will read and act to prevent deaths.

He has minced no words and said that the Ayurvedic claims are not backed with research, and experimenting with the lives of people is unacceptable.

My mind raced to a newcomer to politics, hailing from the NCP, promoting the use of untested preparations and was amazed since most drugs undergo extensive tests before reaching patients. He was ably supported by a colleague who did not want to jeopardise his political future despite being considered an authority. Sad indeed.

Sadly, those, who crowed from roof tops, on their desire to serve, now want umbrellas, iPhones, torches, plus gadgets for backup vehicles. It was also saddening to learn that medicoes, well versed in their discipline, not wanting to oppose the use of these untested products to ensure that their political fortunes will not get affected.

I must say if they want to experiment that they should do so with politicians. However, they are a fortunate breed who have done good karma to live well and where Covid avoids them.

To add to all this drama, came another illegal act, to dent the credibility of the rulers by sacking a much-respected Professional who chaired a statutory body, namely the SRI LANKA MEDICAL COUNCIL, TO PLEASE A TRADE UNION, WHICH RELENTLESSLY WORKED for them.

To the best of my knowledge this institution was established long years ago to protect the interests of the patients from rapacious medical men.

In my view, no trade union should be allowed access to this association, and trust the President, who has enough and more on his plate, will not allow trade union leaders to have a grip on this Association, which is in line with what prevails all over the world – free of trade union or doctors involvement.
